Concord and Fairmont State Draw, 1-1

ATHENS, W.Va- The Concord University women's soccer team drew 1-1 with visiting Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference matchup.

Concord's record stands at 3-7-4, while Fairmont State is now 2-11-2 on the year.

Concord took the lead just nine minutes in after sophomore midfielder Joanna Aiello made a run down the left side of the field. Aiello dropped the ball off to freshman midfielder Karley Poff, who fired a shot from the corner of the 18 yard box that struck the back post and went in for her first career goal in the Maroon and Gray.

The Mountain Lions had several more chances in the first half, but couldn't convert those chances into goals. The Mountain Lions outshot the Fighting Falcons 15-0 in the first half.

In the second half, Concord continued to mount pressure on FSU, but could not find a breakthrough. Senior midfielder Margot Provencher and freshman forward Megan Walsh each forced saves from FSU goalkeeper Shawna Graham in the second half of play.

The Fighting Falcons managed to score on their second shot of the game after Colleen Newsome ran onto a high bouncing ball through the center and managed to tap home her shot at the near post. FSU had three more shots to close regulation, two of which forced sophomore goalkeeper Emily Simpkins to make a save.

Provencher and Walsh were active in the overtime periods, as Provencher forced Graham into a save in the first overtime, while Walsh fired a shot in the second overtime that Graham tipped onto the crossbar to preserve the tie for FSU.

Of the eight shots on goal for Concord, Walsh had three and Elias two. Freshman forward Danielle Hall, Poff and junior midfielder Micharae Thompson each had one.

Concord will travel to Tiffin for a nonconference match against the Dragons on Tuesday.  Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
