BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - The Concord University women's basketball team snapped a 10-game losing streak in style as it defeated Bluefield State 77-52 Tuesday night at the Ned Shott Gymnasium.
Concord improves to 4-14 overall while BSC falls to 1-18.
The Mountain Lions were paced by junior guard
Danielle Catron, who led four Concord players in double figures with 18 points. Sophomore guard
Marta Moix continued her stellar play by tallying 12 points. Senior forward
Kylie Molisee and junior guard
Olivia Morgan each scored 12 points in the game.
After trailing 16-15 at the end of the first quarter, the Mountain Lions opened up a sizeable lead by going on an 18-6 to open up the second quarter. After the outburst, the Mountain Lions led 33-22 with 3:25 remaining until halftime. Freshman guard
Emily Boothe, Catron and Morgan combined for all 18 points.
The Maroon and Gray continued its second-quarter run, taking a 44-28 lead into the locker room.
Concord kept its leads at 20 or more points for most of the second as Bluefield State was able to cut the deficit to 16 points briefly in the third quarter.
Suffocating defense was key in Concord's 25-point win over the Blues. The Mountain Lions recorded 18 steals including a career-high five steals from junior guard
Alexis Lowery. Catron and Morgan each had four steals. The 18 swipes for the Mountain Liosn were the most in a game since head coach
Kenny Osborne took over prior to the 2001-02 season.
In addition to her 12 points,
Olivia Morgan added a career-high 12 assists en route to her first double-double of the season. Tuesday marked the second time this season Concord has had four or more players in double figures.
CU plays host to Fairmont State 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
