ATHENS , W.Va– The Concord University men's soccer team defeated Chowan University on Sunday afternoon 2-1 at Anderson Field in non-confererence action.
Concord improves to 3-4 on the season, while Chowan falls to 4-3-1 on the season.
Concord fell behind early on after Chowan forward Terrell Williamson got behind the Concord defense to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Chowan registered seven shots in the first half to Concord's four. Senior goalkeeper
Logan Powell made a key save in a one-on-one situation to deny Williamson late in the first half and keep the Chowan lead to one goal.
The second half began with only one shot throughout the first 15 minutes of play. Sophomore midfielder
Alex Rhodes found some space around 30 yards from goal before hammering a shot into the upper left corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Concord continued to mount the pressure on the Hawks, with sophomore midfielder Max Simpson, and Rhodes both firing shots within the next five minutes.
Concord took the lead when Rhodes found Simpson on a long pass. Simpson controlled the ball with his chest, took a touch inside and slotted his shot home in the bottom left corner to make the score 2-1 CU.
CU's defense managed to rally after giving up the early goal, only conceding three shots on goal throughout the rest of the match. Powell was called into action again in the 85
th minute as Williamson found himself with some space in the box to get a low shot off. The Beckley, W.Va native managed to get a hand on the shot to stop the ball short of the goal and retain Concord's one goal lead.
Concord outshot Chowan 12-10, with the two teams each having four attempts on goal.
Concord will host Catawba on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
