ATHENS, W.Va -The Concord University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Catawba College on Tuesday as the Indians converted a penalty kick in double overtime.
Concord falls to 3-5 on the season, while Catawba improves to 5-3 on the year.
The game started with the two teams exchanging shots early on. Senior midfielder
Eduardo Filho tested Catawba goalkeeper Christian Watts early on, but had his shot saved. Goalkeeper
Logan Powell kept the score level when he was called into action in the ninth and eleventh minute to deny Catawba's Sam Boggs. Catawba managed 10 shots in the first half to Concord's four.
The second half saw Powell and the Concord defense getting more action as Powell was forced into a save just one minute after the period began. Sophomore midfielder
Alex Rhodes had his effort at goal in the 63
rd minute saved by Watts. Neither team could break the deadlock in the second half, with Catawba outshooting Concord 7-3 over the second 45 minutes.
Neither team managed a shot in overtime until the 100
th minute, when Catawba's Matt Wilkinson had his effort go wide of the goal. Senior defender
Joe Sweet also had an effort at goal go wide in the 103
rd minute.
The stalemate was broken when a foul occurred in the penalty area. Catawba's Phillipp Hollenhorst netted to following penalty kick to end the game in the 106
th minute.
Concord will host nationally ranked Notre Dame College on Saturday, October 3
rd. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
