Concord Erases Early Deficit, Beats West Virginia State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team defeated West Virginia State 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15) in Mountain East Conference action Saturday night at the Carter Center.

After dropping the first set to the Yellow Jackets (3-8, 0-2 MEC) Concord stormed back to take the final three sets to improve its record to 2-14 overall and 1-1 in the league.

WVSU was able to open up a 23-18 lead in the first set and hung on to win the first game. In the second set, both teams never held a lead of more than three, but CU finished the set on a 7-3 run after trailing 19-18. Of the seven points scored by the Mountain Lions, sophomore middle hitter Alexis Elliott and sophomore outside hitter Lisette Roldan had two kills each.

Concord led 16-10 in set three, but the Yellow Jackets stormed back to tie the game at 18-18. Once again, CU finished the set strong and stayed away from errors as WVSU committed three errors in CU's final seven points.

The Mountain Lions took early control of the fourth game, leading 15-9, and eventually stretching its lead to 23-13 before winning 25-15. Freshman middle hitter Brooke Heck paced Concord in the final set by recording five of her 11 kills in the fourth set.

Roldan finished with a season-high 14 kills while Elliott and Heck each had 11 kills.

Freshman setter Jayden Jacobs notched a career-high 31 assists, and became the first CU player to tally 30 or more assists in a match since Nikki McMillan had 36 assists last season at Charleston.

Freshman libero Erin Shannon finished with 20 digs and now has at least 20 digs in four consecutive matches.

CU heads to King University for a tri-match with King and Milligan 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
