Concord Begins MEC Tournament Thursday

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team will open up Mountain East Conference Tournament play 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, West Virginia versus West Virginia State.

RECORDS
• Concord enters the MEC Tournament as the fifth-seed after going 28-21 overall and 24-18 in the league during the regular season.

• Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets finished as the second best team in the conference with an overall mark of 30-13 and 30-10 in the MEC.

THE COACHES
• Andrew Wright has compiled a record of 155-110 in his five seasons at CU.

• WVSU's Sean Loyd is 30-13 in his debut season at West Virginia State.

MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
• Freshman outfielder Andy Szamski finished the regular season as the MEC leader in RBI with 68.

• The Glen Arm, Maryland native was second in the league in triples (six) and fourth in total hits (61 this season.

• It marked the second straight year that a Concord player led the league in RBI after former first baseman Joey Miller topped the MEC in RBI last season with 70.

• Also finishing in the top five in the MEC in a particular statistical category was junior outfielder Andrew Seigel who ranked second in stolen bases (18) and was fifth in runs scored (39).

• Seigel needs four stolen bases and six runs to match last year's career-highs of 22 steals and 45 runs scored.

• However, Seigel is batting over 80 points higher from last year.

• A season ago, Seigel finished the year at .258 and is batting .377 entering the MEC Tournament.

• As far as pitching rankings are concerned for the Mountain Lions in the MEC, junior Chris Kelly and sophomore Zach Kelly appear on several lists.

• C. Kelly finished the season in a tie for third with win (seven).

• Meanwhile, Z. Kelly is third in innings pitched (62.1) and is in a tie for second in games started (11).

• The Mountain Lions will be seeking to beat the Yellow Jackets after West Virginia State took three of four meetings during the regular season and ended CU's season at the MEC Tournament in 2014.

• Concord beat West Virginia State 3-2 on March 24 as sophomore pitcher Nate Werner limited the high-powered Yellow Jackets offense to two runs over five innings.

• Redshirt freshman pitcher / third baseman Damon Frazier recorded the final six outs to earn the win as Szamski's RBI single, that scored Seigel, proved to be the game's winning run in the top of the seventh.

• Senior outfielder T.J. Brockway and redshirt freshman infielder Chad Frazier also had RBI in the Mountain Lions' win.

• In four games versus West Virginia State this season, Szamski has five RBI.

• CU will be making its 16 straight appearance in the conference tournament.

• Furthermore with two more wins at the MEC Tournament, Concord will surpass 30 wins for the third consecutive.

• Prior to 2013, Concord had just two 30-win seasons in program history (35 in 2008 and 33 in 2000.)

NEXT UP
With a win versus West Virginia State, the Mountain Lions would play the winner of the Notre Dame-West Liberty game 7:00 p.m. Friday while a loss against WVSU would pit Concord against the loser of the Shepherd-West Virginia Wesleyan game 11:00 a.m. Friday.
