WISE, Va. – The Concord University baseball team swept a doubleheader from UVa.-Wise, 13-1 and 12-7, Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Stallard Field.
Concord elevates its record to 28-19 and 24-16 in the MEC. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers fall to 12-31 overall and 11-22 in the league.
Game 1: Concord 13 – UVa.-Wise 1CU scored eight runs in the first inning to bust the game open early and then added two runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The Mountain Lions concluded their scoring with a run in the seventh.
Junior outfielder
Andrew Seigel matched his season-high with three RBI including two in the first inning. Junior infielder
Holt Cassada also added two RBI in the first.
Along with Seigel's two hits, senior outfielder
Jerrod Groves and redshirt freshman catcher
Paul Williams each added two-hit games.
Additionally, Williams had two RBI in a 2-for-5 effort at the plate.
Junior pitcher
Chris Kelly tossed his sixth complete game of the season as he scattered eight hits and gave up an unearned run over seven innings. Kelly is now 7-2 this season.
Game 2: Concord 12 – Uva.-Wise 7Four different Mountain Lions had two RBI as CU overcame a seven-run third inning by the Cavaliers to win by five runs.
Concord erased the deficit with a five-run fourth, then followed it up with three additional runs in the fifth to retake the lead 12-7.
Redshirt freshman pitcher / third baseman
Damon Frazier began the fourth inning by homering down the left field line, his third of the season. Seigel and junior shortstop
Brad Sullivan each tallied an RBI while freshman outfielder
Andy Szamski concluded the scoring in the fourth with a two-run RBI.
In the fifth, junor catcher Charlie Goss recorded his two-RBI double to score senior third baseman
T.J. Brockway and Frazier. Goss came around to score later in the inning after stealing third and advancing home on a throwing error by the Cavaliers' catcher.
Brockway, Goss, senior first baseman
Ryan Johnston and Szamski all had two RBI while Brockway, Goss and Sullivan had two-hit games for the Maroon and Gray.
Senior pitcher
Bryant Pybus tossed the final 4.2 innings as he improved to 4-1 this season. In the relief effort, Pybus scattered three hits and did not give up an earned run.
The Mountain Lions and UVa.-Wise will finish their four-game series 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
