ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team closed out its home schedule by going 1-1 against West Virginia Wesleyan at Anderson Field in Mountain East Conference play Saturday.
Concord (25-15, 21-15 MEC) fought back to win game one 14-8 before dropping the nightcap to the Bobcats (15-14, 14-14 MEC) 6-4.
Game 1: Concord 14 – West Virginia Wesleyan 8The Mountain Lions erased a 6-2 fourth-inning deficit as they scored 12 runs in their final three at-bats to win 14-8.
Concord drew to within 6-5 after a three-run frame in the fourth before plating six runs in the fifth
The rally in fifth inning included the Mountain Lions sending nine batters to the plate as senior outfielder
Jerrod Groves and freshman outfielder
Andy Szamski each recorded two RBI in the frame.
With two Concord runs already in, Groves collected two of his game-high five RBI as scoring junior shortstop
Brad Sullivan, who had his own RBI single in the inning and pinch runner, redshirt freshman
Chad Frazier scored. The next batter, Szamski, tripled to deep center field to bring home Groves and junior outfielder
Andrew Seigel. After the scoring eruption in the fifth, CU took an 11-6 lead.
Concord tacked on three more runs in the eighth as Groves, Seigel and Sullivan all had run-scoring hits.
Freshman pitcher
Reece Edwards tossed the final 5.2 innings in relief to earn his second win of the season. Edwards gave up three runs on hits while fanning four WVWC hitters.
Groves (five), Seigel (three), Sullivan (two) and Szamski (three) combined for 13 of CU's 14 RBI while redshirt freshman catcher
Paul Williams had one RBI. Additionally, Sullivan was a perfect 4-for-4 as eight of Concord's nine hitters recorded multi-hit games.
The Mountain Lions pounded out 21 hits altogether, which was a season high for the Maroon and Gray.
Game 2: West Virginia Wesleyan 6 – Concord 4WVWC scored all six of its runs from the fifth inning on as it took down Concord by a two-run margin.
Three runs by the Bobcats in the sixth allowed them to overtake the Mountain Lions 5-4 before they added an insurance run in the seventh.
CU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one as Seigel and senior outfielder
T.J. Brockway each had RBI hits, and Szamski recorded an RBI groundout. Concord expanded its lead in the second as senior first baseman
Ryan Johnston added his own RBI groundout.
However, the rest of the scoring in game two belonged to West Virginia Wesleyan.
Redshirt freshman third baseman / pitcher
Damon Frazier (2-3) was tagged with the loss in a relief appearance. CU starting pitcher freshman
Angel Morales tossed five innings giving up four runs.
Groves led Concord in hitting recording three of its eight hits. After going 9-for-12 with eight RBI against WVWC, the Covington, Virginia native raised his average to a team-high .403.
Concord will face Bluefield State Wednesday.
