Concord Falls to Bluefield State in 13 Innings

PRINCETON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team dropped a non-conference clash with Bluefield State, 7-6, at Hunnicutt Field Wednesday night.

An infield single in the bottom of the 13th inning by Bluefield State proved to be the game's winning run.

After falling behind in the first inning, Concord (25-16) plated three runs in the top of the third as junior infielder Holt Cassada and freshman Andy Szamski registered RBI singles in the frame. However, BSC answered the three-run top half of the inning by the Mountain Lions with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame.

Once the third inning was Bluefield State (9-28) had a 5-3 lead.

BSC added a run in the fifth before the Mountain Lions mounted a rally.

Szamski brought home junior outfielder Andrew Seigel on a sacrifice fly in the sixth after Seigel led off the inning with a double.

In the eighth, Szamski was once again right in the middle of the CU rally as his single into shallow center field plated senior outfielder Jerrod Groves and Seigel, tying the game at 6-6.

After neither team could muster a run in the ninth inning, the contest headed for extra innings. Wednesday marked the sixth time this season Concord has played extra innings and the third time the game has gone 11 innings or longer.

It appeared junior shortstop Brad Sullivan would put the Mountain Lions ahead in the 11th inning with a go-ahead double down the right field line, but his hit landed just outside the foul line.

With runners on first and third and one out in the bottom of the 13th,  BSC's Tyler Frazier chopped a ball to third base. The throw to the plate was off the mark allowing pinch-runner Kevin Moxey to score.

Redshirt freshman pitcher / third baseman Damon Frazier (2-4) was the pitcher of record for Concord.

Seigel and Szamski each had three hits for Concord while Szamski recorded four of the six CU RBI.

The Mountain Lions will travel for an MEC weekend series beginning 1:00 p.m. Saturday at West Liberty.
