Concord Splits Against W.Va. Wesleyan in Showdown Between Top Teams in MEC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATHENS, W.Va. – In what was a battle between the top two teams in the Mountain East Conference, the Concord University softball team split with West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon at the CU Softball Complex.

The Mountain Lions (25-11, 13-3 MEC) came back to win game one in extra innings, 5-4, before dropping the nightcap  11-6 to WVWC (22-6, 12-2 MEC).

Game 1: Concord 5 – West Virginia Wesleyan 4 (Eight Innings)
Junior second baseman Kristen Rose's fielder's choice in the eighth inning plated sophomore outfielder Lauren Lewis for the game's winning run.

Lewis led off the inning by reaching an on error and stealing third base. After a flyout, Rose put the ball in play and Lewis scampered home to give CU the walk-off win.

It wasn't the only time in the game that Lewis impacted the outcome.

Lewis launched her third home run in two games in the first inning to also score senior pitcher / first baseman Lacey McDougall. West Virginia Wesleyan rallied for four runs in the second before CU came back with two of its own in the third.

McDougall reached on one of three WVWC errors with one out in the third. Junior catcher Alyssa Morris plated McDougall on an RBI double before scoring herself on Lewis' RBI base hit.

Bobcats' starter Hannah Vet and McDougall settled in over the final four innings of regulation to keep the game locked at 4-4. A two-out walk by McDougall in the top of the eighth was unharmful, setting the stage for Rose's key at-bat in the bottom of the inning.

CU's 2-4 hitters of McDougall, Morris and Lewis went 6-for-12 with five runs scored and four RBI.

McDougall (11-4) pitched all eight innings giving up two earned runs and striking out five batters.

Game 2: West Virginia Wesleyan 11 – Concord 6
Three three-run innings by WVWC was too much for Concord to overcome as it had to settle for a split against the Bobcats.

After West Virginia Wesleyan raced out to an 8-1 advantage after four innings, CU fought back in the fifth with four runs.

Morris blasted her conference-leading 12th home run of the season. Freshman infielder Alycea Watson added a two-out two-RBI hit while sophomore catcher Carly DiVirgilio recorded a run-scoring single of her own to draw Concord to within 8-5 of WVWC.

But, the Bobcats answered the Concord rally with three runs in the top of the sixth.

CU pounded out 12 hits with DiVirgilio leading the way with three. McDougall, Morris, Lewis and junior pitcher Allie Reid each had two hits.

Over her last four games, Lewis is 8-for-14 with six runs scored, three home runs, a double and nine RBI.

Freshman pitcher Katie Sndgress (5-3) was tagged with the loss after going 2.1 innings, giving up five runs.

McDougall and Reid finished out the final 4.2 innings with Reid throwing 3.2 of those and striking out five.

Concord will travel to West Liberty 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
