ATHENS, W.Va. – Despite a blustery wind blowing in from the outfield at the CU Softball Complex, the Concord University softball used five home runs to sweep Notre Dame, 7-2 and 8-2, Monday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference clash.
Sophomore outfielder
Lauren Lewis and junior catcher
Alyssa Morris each hit two home runs while senior pitcher / first baseman
Lacey McDougall added a homer in the second game.
Game 1: Concord 7 – Notre Dame 2Lewis and Morris combined for all seven RBI in the victory while McDougall limited the Falcons to two runs on five hits in a complete-game effort to improve to 10-3 this season.
With CU (22-8, 10-0 MEC) already leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first via a Morris run-scoring base hit, Lewis belted a home run down the right field line, scoring Morris to stretch the lead to 3-0.
The long ball kept coming after a second-inning one-out double by sophomore shortstop
Alayna Furr, Morris launched a home run down the left field line, making it 5-0.
NDC (6-16, 3-5 MEC) starter Ashley Pokraka held the Concord bats in check until another two-run blast came off the bat of Lewis in the fifth inning to give the Mountain Lions a 7-1 advantage.
The Falcons scored a run in the sixth inning, but CU cruised to a 7-2 win behind Lewis' fifth and sixth home runs of the season and Morris' team leading ninth.
Furr and Morris both had three-hit games while Lewis collected both of her hits on the homers.
Game 2: Concord 8 – Notre Dame 2A 2-0 first inning hole didn't faze the Mountain Lions as they answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning en route to an 8-2 win.
Morris quickly evened the score with her second two-run homer of the day and her third in four games as she also plated McDougall in the first inning. The rally continued when junior second baseman
Kristen Rose tripled home Lewis. And freshman infielder
Alycea Watson collected her first RBI since March 21 as she ripped a single down the left field line to score Rose as that capped the scoring in the first.
After the two first inning runs, CU starting pitcher freshman
Katie Snodgress allowed just three more runners to reach base in the final six innings as she improved to 5-1 this season.
Morris added a sacrifice fly in the fifth before McDougall concluded the home run show with a homer off the adjacent tennis court fence in left center field.
McDougall and Morris each three RBI as Morris finished the afternoon 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two home runs and six RBI.
Concord will take its 17-game winning streak on the road to Charleston 2:00 p.m. Friday.
