Concord Capitalizes Against Glenville State, 7-4, 6-0

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Glenville State by taking both games, 7-4 and 6-0, Sunday afternoon at the Sue Morris Complex in Mountain East Conference competition.

CU (14-9, 13-7 MEC) erased an early 2-0 deficit to take the first game before sophomore pitcher Nate Werner stifled the Glenville State (4-18, 4-14 MEC) offense in the nightcap.

Game 1: Concord 7 – Glenville State 4
GSC got on the board first with a run apiece in the first and second innings before the Concord bats broke out for four runs in the third to give the Mountain Lions a lead they would not relinquish.

In the third, junior catcher Charles Goss singled  to begin the inning. Senior Jerrod Groves put the ball in play, but a GSC error allowed Groves to reach and Goss to score to start the scoring rally. Freshman outfielder Andy Szamski and senior first baseman Ryan Johnston each had an RBI single in the frame while junior infielder Holt Cassada recorded an RBI groundout.

After the Pioneers drew to within 4-3, CU added a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to give senior reliever Bryant Pybus some added breathing room as Pybus (1-0) earned the win in relief.

The sixth-inning tally came courtesy of Johnston scoring on a wild pitch while in the seventh, Szamski's two-run home, his second in as many games the long ball, also scored Groves to make it 7-4.

Pybus limited GSC to three hits and one earned run in four innings out of the bullpen.

Seigel led CU in hits with three and Szamski added two.

Game 2: Concord 6 – Glenville State 0
Concord gave Werner plenty of run support as the Brookville, Indiana native gave up a mere two hits while striking out six batters as he combined with redshirt freshman third baseman / pitcher Damon Frazier to stymie the Pioneers.

In his six innings of work, Werner faced just four batters over the minimum and at one point he retired 15 straight batters.

Additionally, in four of his five starts this season Werner has allowed two or less earned runs as he leads CU with an ERA of 2.61 and Sunday's victory ran his record to 2-1.

Johnston had an RBI single in the first inning while redshirt freshman infielder Chad Frazier had an RBI in the fourth. Groves launched his first home run of the season in the fifth inning to stretch the CU lead to 3-0.

However, Concord wasn't done scoring as they posted three runs in the sixth. Three errors in the inning let Frazier, Johnston and junior shortstop Brad Sullivan score in the frame.

Johnston (three) and Sullivan (three) combined for six of the 10 hits Concord had in game two while Groves recorded two.

Concord will host Bluefield State in a nine-inning  game 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 1 at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton, West Virginia.
