PRINCETON, W.Va. – Behind early scoring, the Concord University baseball team downed Bluefield State 10-7 Wednesday night at Hunnicutt Field in a non-conference clash.
The Mountain Lions scored 10 runs over the first five innings as they improved to 15-9 this season while Bluefield State fell to 7-15.
A first inning that yielded four runs was the first five batters reaching base and back-to-back RBI singles from senior outfielder
Jerrod Groves and freshman outfielder
Andy Szamski that scored leadoff hitter junior shortstop
Brad Sullivan and junior outfielder
Andrew Seigel.
Senior outfielder TJ Brockway and redshirt freshman
Chad Frazier both added RBI base knocks in the frame as all nine CU hitters batted in the first.
Frazier added two more of his game-high four RBI in the fourth inning as his two-run single broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the third inning after BSC had knotted the game in the top of the frame. Sullivan also added an RBI single in the frame.
After Brockway led off the fifth inning by ripping a double to center field and moved over to third, Frazier notched his fourth RBI of the night by singling home Brockway. Sullivan scored Frazier as he busted his own double to center field.
The Mountain Lions concluded their scoring for the game as Groves plated Sullivan on a sacrifice fly.
Down 10-4 entering the top of the ninth, Bluefield State scored three runs, and loaded the bases with two outs before sophomore pitcher / outfielder
Eli Flynn induced BSC's Ricky Diaz into a groundout to Sullivan at shortstop to end the game and give Concord a 10-7 triumph.
Senior pitcher
Bryant Pybus tossed 5.1 innings of scoreless relief to elevate his record to 2-0 this season. Pybus struck out four batters while allowing just one hit.
Frazier is the only Concord player to have four RBI in a game this season, but the Roanoke, Virginia native has now done it twice this season after driving in four runs against Wingate March 17.
By tallying two hits tonight, Groves passed Josh Wenger for eighth on the all-time hits list at Concord with 211. Groves' next hit will tie Scott for seventh on the list.
CU will jump back into Mountain East Conference play 1:00 p.m. Thursday when they welcome Charleston to Anderson Field. Â Â
