Strong Pitching Lifts Concord Past Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team swept the first two games of a four-game set with Glenville State Saturday, winning 7-2 and 3-0 at the Sue Morris Complex in Mountain East Conference play.

Concord (12-9, 11-7 MEC) got stellar starts from junior Chris Kelly in game one and sophomore Zach Kelly in game two to propel them to the wins.

Game 1: Concord 7 – Glenville State 2
Four runs in the third inning broke a scoreless tie between the teams and allowed CU to ease to a five-run win .

The third-inning rally began with a walk and single from redshirt freshman infielder Chad Frazier and junior catcher Charles Goss. After GSC (4-16, 4-12 MEC) recorded two outs, senior outfielder Jerrod Groves loaded the bases with a walk of his own before freshman Andy Szamski cleared the bases with double to left center field to give CU a 3-0 edge.

A single from junior infielder Holt Cassada plated Szamski to conclude the scoring in the frame.

After C. Kelly held the Pioneers to two hits in the first four innings, Glenville State broke through with two runs in the fifth, however, CU responded with three more runs in the seventh as Frazier and Goss both scored on errors, and junior outfielder Andrew Seigel scored on a sacrifice fly by Groves.

C. Kelly ran his record to 4-1 by pitching a complete game and striking out six batters, one shy of matching his season best.

Szamski had two of CU's four hits and three of its six RBI in the game.

Game 2: Concord 3 – Glenville State 0
Z. Kelly pitched his first career complete-game shutout as the Daleville, Virginia native limited the Pioneers to three hits while matching his career-high in strikeouts with six.

The Mountain Lions gave Z. Kelly two early runs of support as Seigel scored on a Pioneers' miscue and Cassada doubled home Groves in the first inning.

Szamski launched his first career home run and the first of the season by any Concord player in the third inning to stretch CU's lead to 3-0.

Z. Kelly retired the last seven batters of the game and nine of the last 11 hitters he faced as GSC only advanced runners into scoring position four times against Z. Kelly. Concord's right-handed pitcher improved to 2-3 this season and lowered his ERA from 5.55 to 4.31 in the shutout.

Szamski capped the doubleheader with five RBI after collecting two more in the nightcap.

Seigel recorded three hits while Groves had two hits in the win.

CU and Glenville State will finish its four-game series 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
