AVON, Ohio – The Concord University baseball team split a twin bill with Notre Dame College Friday afternoon at All Pro Freight Stadium in Mountain East Conference action.
The Mountain Lions (8-7, 7-5 MEC) won game one 2-0 behind exceptional pitching from junior
Chris Kelly before being edged in the nightcap 3-1 by NDC (5-3, 5-1 MEC).
Game 1: Concord 2 – Notre Dame 0 Kelly set the tone for a Concord win by completely shutting down the Falcons' offense as the Grundy, Virginia native limited Notre Dame to three hits.
It was the second time in three starts that Kelly has limited the opposition to five or less hits and no runs as he accomplished the same feat against Urbana March 9.
In the process, Kelly ran his record to 3-1 on the season.
The Concord offense was supplied by freshman outfielder
Andy Szamski as his fourth-inning RBI single plated senior first baseman
Ryan Johnston and broke a scoreless tie. CU got an insurance run for Kelly in the fifth as Johnston's base knock scored junior outfielder
Andrew Seigel.
After the Mountain Lions took a 2-0 lead, Kelly stranded the bases loaded in the fifth inning to work out of the only real Notre Dame scoring threat in the game.
Johnston and Seigel both recorded multi-hit games as they went 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively. Additionally, Seigel stole his team-leading eighth base of the season.
Game 2: Notre Dame 3 – Concord 1Szamksi's RBI single that scored redshirt freshman infielder
Chad Frazier in the fifth inning was the only run Concord scored on Notre Dame starter Jeff Stover.
Phil Ramos silenced the CU offense in the final two innings as Notre Dame clipped the Mountain Lions.
Sophomore pitcher
Zach Kelly (1-3) was the tough-luck loser for Concord as he pitched all six innings allowing three earned runs and striking out two batters.
It was the second consecutive start that Z. Kelly has allowed three or less earned runs. Â
Frazier was the only CU player to recorded at least two hits as he went 2-for-3 at the dish, and senior outfielder
Jerrod Groves hit a double.
Concord and NDC will conclude their four-game set with another doubleheader 12:00 p.m. Saturday.
