PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Concord University softball team came from behind to down Winston-Salem State 5-2 Sunday morning in its final game at the UNC-Pembroke Invitational.
Concord (4-5) found themselves down 2-0 after the Rams (0-5) scored twice in the third inning to break a scoreless tie.
The Mountain Lions rallied for four runs in the fourth inning to overtake Winston-Salem State.
The Concord comeback began with a one-out single from senior first baseman / pitcher
Brantlea Wood. Sophomore outfielder / shortstop
Lauren Lewis brought home freshman outfielder
Emily Fry, who was pinch-running for Wood, on a double. Lewis would cross the plate herself on a sacrifice fly from sophomore pitcher / outfielder
Sarah Herndon.
The rally continued with two unearned runs. Junior outfielder / shortstop
Kristen Rose scored on a throwing error after lacing a double to right-center field. The final Concord run in the fourth inning came when senior outfielder
Jessica Seymour scored on a double from junior outfielder
Kristi Benvenuto that also produced a throwing error from the Rams.
CU added an insurance run in the fifth inning as junior catcher
Alyssa Morris scored on a base hit by Herndon.
Concord's offense gave more than enough support to freshman pitcher
Katie Snodgress who earned her first career win by scattering four hits in four innings of work. Both of the runs scored by WSSU were unearned. Junior pitcher
Allie Reid worked the final three innings to pick up her first save of the season.
Sunday was the first career multi-RBI game for Herndon. Additionally, after Sunday's contest CU has now outscored Winston-Salem State 29-7 in three matchups this season. Benvenuto led Concord's offense with a 2-for-4 effort, her third-multi hit game of the season.
Concord will next play 1:00 p.m. Feb.20 at the Shaw Softball Challenge against Lees-McRae College.
