Concord Gets Beat in Doubleheader at UNC-Pembroke Invitational

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Concord University softball team dropped a pair of game at the UNC-Pembroke Invitational Saturday.

CU (3-5) lost to Kutztown 5-2 in its first game of the day before getting beat 4-2 by Coker in the afternoon.

Game 1: Kutztown 5 – Concord 2
Kutztown scored all five runs of its runs in the fifth inning to put the Mountain Lions in a hole they were unable to climb out of.

However, just three of the runs were charged to senior outfielder / pitcher Lacey McDougall (2-2) as she pitched six innings while striking out two batters and scattering seven hits.

Concord mounted a comeback in the fifth inning after McDougall's base hit plated sophomore first baseman / third baseman Courtney Purtell, who led off the inning with a single of her own. Morris, the proceeding batter, laced a double to right centerfield as McDougall came around to score. But, it was all the Mountain Lions could score as they fell 5-2.

Sophomore shortstop / outfielder Alayna Furr and junior outfielder Kristi Benvenuto each had two hits in the game.

Game 2: Coker 4 – Concord 2
The Cobras scored four runs over the first three innings to hold an early edge over Concord and win by two runs.

The Mountain Lions were held to just one hit until the sixth inning when the Concord offense came to life and attempted to rally. Junior catcher Alyssa Morris blasted a solo home run with one out in the sixth inning to draw within 4-1.

In the seventh inning, sophomore shortstop / outfielder Lauren Lewis collected a pinch-hit single to begin the inning and later scored on a fielder's choice by Purtell. Furr reached on a fielder's choice and freshman third baseman / shortstop Alycea Watson kept the rally alive by knocking a single to center field. Morris, the game's tying-run stepped to the plate, but grounded out to end the game.

Sophomore pitcher / outfielder Sarah Herndon (1-1) was charged with her first loss of the season after allowing three earned runs in five innings of work.

Concord will finish its time at the UNC-Pembroke Invitational 9:00 a.m. Sunday against Winston-Salem State.
