USC-Aiken Stats ATHENS, W.Va. – After the Shaw Softball Challenge was postponed this weekend, the Concord University softball team added a 3:00 p.m. Saturday doubleheader at USC-Aiken to its schedule.
RECORDS• Concord has compiled an early season record of 4-5.
• Meanwhile, USC-Aiken is 3-1 through four games.
THE COACHES• In the midst of her fourth season at Concord,
Alisa Tasler is 75-88
• Jerry Snyder has been at the helm of USC-Aiken for 28 seasons and has compiled a record of 666-624-1.
MOUNTAIN LION NOTES• Saturday will be the first meeting between the two schools.
• In fact, Concord has only played five teams out of the Peach Belt Conference, owning a 6-3 record all-time versus PBC schools.
• CU finished the UNC-Pembroke Invitational with a mark of 2-3 with wins over UNCP and Winston-Salem State.
• Early in the season junior catcher
Alyssa Morris has paced the Mountain Lions offense with five home runs and eight RBI while also posting a batting average of .375.
• Morris, who is already CU's career home run leader with 25, is already well-ahead of her own single season record of 11 home runs.
• Sophomore first baseman / third baseman
Courtney Purtell has also had a hot start to the 2015 season as she is batting .367 with four extra-base hits and seven RBI.
• Last season Purtell had 12 RBI in 42 games played.
• Freshman shortstop / third baseman
Alycea Watson has had an immediate impact at Concord in just nine games.
• Watson is batting .357 (10-for-28), joining Morris (12) and Purtell (11) with 10 or more hits this season.
• The New Castle, Delaware native also has five RBI.
• In Concord's 5-2 win over Winston-Salem State at the UNCP Invitational, sophomore pitcher / outfielder
Sarah Herndon drove in a career-best two runs.
• Herndon is closing in on matching her hit total from last season through nine.
• The Berryville, Virginia native has five hits this season after only collecting six hits during her freshman year.
• Sophomore shortstop / outfielder
Lauren Lewis will carry a hitting streak of five games into the weekend contest while Morris has a hitting streak of four games.
• Dating back to last season, Morris has at least one hit in 22 of her last 23 games.
• The Mountain Lions are averaging 6.1 runs per game and a big part of that success has been their ability to hit with runners with in scoring position (RISP).
• As a team, CU is batting .321 (26-for-8) with RISP compared to a .315 overall batting average.
• Junior outfielder
Kristi Benvenuto and senior first baseman / pitcher
Brantlea Wood are both 4-for-6 with RISP this season.
• Senior first baseman / pitcher
Lacey McDougall has spearheaded the CU pitching effort this season as she has thrown four complete games, compiling an ERA of 1.96 and striking out 14 batters in 25 innings of work.
SCOUTING USC-AIKEN• Each of the Pacers three wins have been decided by one run with 2-1 and 4-3 wins over Queens (N.C.) and a 6-5 victory over Newberry.
• Like CU, USC-Aiken was supposed to play at the Shaw Softball Challenge, but weather forced the postponement of the event to March 6-8.
• Samantha Chubb has a team-high four RBI and is batting .273 this season.
• Sydney Murphy is batting .357 with two doubles for USC-Aiken.
• Taylor Morgan has tossed complete games in both of her starts this season.
• Morgan has an ERA of 1.58 with 18 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched.
