ATHENS, W.Va. – An 11-0 run over the final 1:23 of the first half sparked the Concord University men's basketball team a 103-79 home win over Glenville State Thursday night in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.
After GSC took a 38-35 lead with 1:47 remaining in the first half, Â the Mountain Lions erupted for the final 11 points of the first half.
Junior guard
Cam Shannon started the outburst with a three-point from the left side wing. Fellow junior guard
Michael Sanchez followed Shannon's triple with his own three-pointer as CU recaptured the lead, 41-38.
After a defensive stop, Shannon got his own miss on the offensive end and converted a layup with five second remaining. With time ticking away, Sanchez stole the ensuing in-bound pass and hoisted a deep three-pointer as time expired in the first half to give Concord a 46-38 going into the locker room.
The run was especially important for Concord because junior guard
Aaron Miller and senior guard
Rob Reed were sitting on the bench with foul trouble.
However, Miller and Reed wouldn't stay down for long. After each team traded baskets to start the second half and make the score 52-42, Miller and Reed combined to score the next 22 points for the Mountain Lions.
Miller scored the first 10 with a layup, a running jump shot and two three-pointers while Reed knocked down four straight three-pointers for the second 12 points of the run.
With 7:29 left in the game, the Pioneers were still hanging around, trailing 77-65. Concord outscored GSC 16-5 over the next four minutes to take a commanding lead, 95-70 en route to the 24 points win.
In the run, all five starters for CU scored with Miller and Reed each notching five points.
For the game, Reed finished with a game-high 23 points, knocking down six three-pointers. Miller scored all 15 of his points in the second half.
Senior forward
Terry Hopewell and senior forward
Jametrius Wade each recorded double-double as Hopewell had a season-high 17 points and 15 rebounds. Meanwhile, Wade had 18 points and 11 rebounds. The duo also combined to go 11-for-15 at the free-throw line where Wade was 8-for-11.
All five starters for CU got in double-figures as Sanchez recorded 10 points and seven assists.
Shannon led the bench effort for Concord with nine points.
The Mountain Lions held a decisive advantage on the glass (40-30) and was also shot better than the Pioneers (56.9-40.3).
The Maroon and Gray hosts West Virginia Wesleyan 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
