ELKINS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team and Davis & Elkins traded each other basket for basket in the second half of Wednesday afternoon's game, but it was Davis & Elkins who came out on top 62-60 at the McDonnell Center in a non-conference clash.
A jumper by senior forward
Kylie Molisee with 5:32 left in the third quarter tied the game after the Senators had built seven-point halftime lead. From there the teams would go back and forth. After three quarters of play, Davis & Elkins led CU 46-43.
However, the Mountain Lions scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take a 49-46 lead thanks to a three-pointer by freshman guard
Emily Boothe, a free-throw by junior guard
Olivia Morgan and a jumper by freshman forward
Jenna Holton.
D&E responded with a 10-2 run to go up 56-51 with 3:44 remaining in the contest. A triple by Boothe made it 58-57 with 1:37 left in the game, but the Senators' Stephanie Wooten was a perfect 4-for4 from the free-throw in the final 17 seconds of the game as Davis & Elkins edged Concord 62-60.
Boothe and sophomore guard
Danielle Catron each finished in double figures for CU as Boothe netted 10 and Catron had a team-high 13 points.
Molisee came within two points of notching a double-double as she scored eight points and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds. Meanwhile, Morgan had nine points, six assists and three steals.
Wooten tallied a game-high 25 points including a 9-for-9 effort from the foul line.
Despite the loss, Concord held Davis & Elkins to 31.1 percent (19-for-61) from the field, the second-lowest defensive field goal percentage for a CU opponent this season.
The Senators held advantages on the glass (49-34) and second-chance points (18-1).
Concord had its fourth double-digit steal game of the season. Along with Morgan's three steals, sophomore guard
Marta Moix stole three balls.
The Mountain Lions will break for Christmas, and will play again 5:30 p.m. January 4 at Shepherd.
