FAIRMONT, W.V.a – Sophomore midfielder
Micharae Thompson lifted the Concord University women's soccer team to late, dramatic 1-0 victory over Fairmont State in double overtime Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Duvall-Rosier Field.
CU improves to 5-6-4 overall and 4-6-3 in the MEC while Fairmont State falls to 2-12-1 overall and 2-10-1 in the league. Â
After both teams went scoreless for the 100 minutes of the contest, the Mountain Lions continued to pepper the FSU goal as they had all game. Junior forward
Emily Cole had one shot saved and another blocked in the second overtime, but the blocked shot attempt forced a corner kick by Concord.
Sophomore midfielder
Sarah Akers fired the ensuing corner kick into the penalty area where Thompson corralled the ball and blasted it past Fighting Falcons goalkeeper Shawna Graham.
The Mountain Lions put pressure on Graham all day as they recorded 12 shots on goal including two by senior forward
Kari Simon in the final few moments of regulation that could have won the game had Graham not made the saves.
Simon had a team-high four shots on goal while Cole and freshman forward
Pilar Elias had two and three shots on target, respectively. For Thompson, she had only one shot on goal, the game-winner.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kaylee Taylor recorded her first career shutout by making four saves.
CU fired a season-high 30 total shots to Fairmont State's nine. Concord also owned an edge in corner kicks (4-1).
The win for Concord was especially important because it keeps the Mountain Lions in the thick of the MEC playoff race.
CU hosts the University of the Charleston in the final game of the season 12:00 p.m. next Sunday.
