Concord Uses Second-Half Spark to Defeat Wheeling Jesuit

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team used three goals to defeat Wheeling Jesuit 3-2 Thursday afternoon in Mountain East Conference at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions improve to 4-6-4 (3-6-3 MEC) while Wheeling Jesuit falls to 2-9-2 (2-7-2 MEC).

Freshman forward Pilar Elias put Concord on the board first in the 28th minute as she found the back of the net on a ball played deep from Concord territory by sophomore midfielder Sarah Akers.

Wheeling Jesuit got a goal 90 seconds before halftime to draw even at the intermission, 1-1.

The Cardinals peppered the CU goal early in the second half forcing freshman goalkeeper Kaylee Taylor to make one save. The save by Taylor allowed the game to stay tied, and permitted sophomore midfielder Micharae Thompson to give the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute.

Thompson dribbled through a pair of WJU defenders after receiving the ball from junior forward Emily Cole in the box. CU added to its lead nine minutes later as senior forward Kari Simon beat Wheeling Jesuit goalkeeper Hannah Thompson for her seventh goal of the season.

WJU scored on a penalty kick in the 75th minute, but CU preserved the one-goal lead for the win. The Concord defense limited Wheeling Jesuit to two opportunities in the final 15 minutes with neither shot being on goal.

Taylor finished the game with eight saves while Simon had a team-high two shots on goal.

Wheeling Jesuit held advantages on shots (20-14), shots on goal (10-7) and corner kicks (7-3).

Thursday marked the first time CU scored three goals in a game since September 17 when it scored three against Urbana at home.

With her goal Thursday, Simon moved back into the MEC lead in goals with seven, breaking a tie with West Virginia Wesleyan's Colette Biondi.

Additionally, Cole set a new career-high for assists in a season by adding her fourth and fifth assists of the season Thursday. Cole's 10 career assists also moves her into 10th on the all-time assists list at Concord.
The Mountain Lions travel to Fairmont State 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
