Concord Falls to Wheeling Jesuit

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team was downed 76-62 by Wheeling Jesuit in Mountain East Conference play Monday night at the Carter Center.

The Mountain Lions opened up the game by scoring 11 of the first 16 points as freshman guard Lindsey Overbey and senior guard Melea Smith combined for nine of the 11 points.

CU (3-7, 3-3 MEC) ran its lead to 21-14 as senior forward Jacqueline Kestner (six points) and sophomore center Alley Odell (four points) combined for the next 10 Concord points.

However, Wheeling Jesuit (6-3, 3-2 MEC) outscored the Mountain Lions 10-2 over the next three minutes to take a 25-24 lead with 8:07 left in the first half.  WJU and the Mountain Lions traded the lead four times in the next two minutes before the Cardinals took a 43-39 edge into the locker room.

Concord knotted the game at 45-45 with 18:04 left in the contest as Kestner and Smith each connected on three-point attempts to start the second half. The Mountain Lions overtook the Cardinals 49-48 after a Kestner jumper with 14:22 left in the game, however, WJU regained the lead just 30 seconds later.

Wheeling Jesuit began to widen its lead as CU could not get any closer over the final 13 minutes of the game as they went on to win by 14.

Kestner was the standout for CU as she had 20 points and 10 rebounds to notch her sixth double-double of the season. It was the first time in her career she has recorded at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in the same contest.

Smith had 17 points including three three-pointers and contributed a career-high five assists.

Odell finished with eight points while senior forward Rachel Artrip had six points and seven rebounds for the Mountain Lions.

CU edged Wheeling Jesuit in made three-pointers (6-5) and blocks (3-1) while the teams finished even in assists.

Wheeling Jesuit was led by Jaana Motton who had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
