CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team lost to Charleston 61-46 Thursday night in Mountain East Conference at Eddie King Gymnasium.
Both teams started the game by playing relentless defense. After eight minutes of play, Concord (3-8, 4 eight minutes of play, Concord (3-8, 3-4 MEC) led Charleston 8-6. In the early stages of the game, the Mountain Lions forced Charleston (10-3, 5-2) into five turnovers.
With the game tied at 12-12, UC was able to outscore Concord 9-0 over the next three minutes to take a 21-12 lead with 5:14 remaining in the first half. However, Concord scored seven of the game's next 10 points to trim the halftime deficit to 24-19. Senior forwards
Rachel Artrip (four) and
Jacqueline Kestner (three) combined for the CU points during the run.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half on 12-0 run to extend their lead to 36-19 with 16:59 left in the contest.
Concord could only get as close as 12 points, 55-43, with 2:05 remaining in the game.
Artrip led the Mountain Lions in scoring with 13 points while Kestner also notched double digits with 10 points and six rebounds. Sophomore center
Alley Odell scored six points and grabbed four offensive rebounds. Freshman guard/forward
Danielle Catron came off the bench to provide six points on 3-for-6 shooting.
CU came away with a season high in steals with 10. Kestner and senior guard
Melea Smith had two each.
The Mountain Lions will travel to Logan for a neutral-court showdown with Fairmont State 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
