Concord Drops Doubleheader at Urbana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio – The Concord University softball team lost a doubleheader on the road Sunday afternoon at Urbana University, 8-0, 3-2, in Mountain East Conference action.

With the losses Concord's record now stands at 19-11 overall and 3-5 in the MEC while Urbana improves to 16-4 overall and 8-0 in league play with the win.

The Mountain Lions were led on the day by freshman third baseman Courtney Purtell and sophomore catcher Alyssa Morris. Purtell was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI while Morris went 2-for-5 with a run scored, a home run, an RBI and a double.

Game One: Urbana 8 – Concord 0 (Box Score)(Six Innings)
Urbana tallied seven runs in the first two innings en route to an 8-0 victory over Concord in six innings.

The Blue Knights scored five runs in the first inning with the help of three extra-base hits including a two-run homer by Macie Jenkins. Urbana then added two more runs in the second to pull ahead 7-0 before ending the contest with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Purtell was 2-for-2 at the plate with the double while Morris and junior first baseman Brantlea Wood tallied one hit apiece for CU.

Sophomore pitcher Allie Reid (10-4) threw 5.2 innings for the Mountain Lions while surrendering eight earned runs and striking out five hitters. Reid now has a team-high 71 strikeouts on the season.

Game Two: Urbana 3 – Concord 2 (Box Score)
The nightcap featured a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. The Mountain Lions held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but Urbana ultimately battled back to defeat Concord on a walk-off home run in the seventh.

Concord started the game with a run in the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Kristen Rose led off the contest with a single and, after advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman designated player Alayna Furr, scored on an RBI-single by Purtell to give Concord an early 1-0 edge.

CU held the one-run advantage until the bottom of the fourth when Urbana's Ashley Skinner drove a double to center field to score Danielle Farnlacher.

The score remained tied until the Mountain Lions answered back in the top of the sixth when Morris crushed her fifth home run of the year to put CU up 2-1.

However, with a runner on first base in the bottom of the seventh, Farnlacher hit a two-run home run to left field to give Urbana a 3-2 victory over Concord.

Freshman pitcher Sarah Herndon (2-5) lasted all 6.1 innings for the Mountain Lions, giving up just three earned runs on four hits and striking out three batters. Herndon didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and retired 10 of the first 12 batters she faced in the game.

Morris was 1-for-3 in game two with the home run. Purtell and Rose were each 1-for-3 with Purtell recording her second RBI of the season and Rose scoring her team-leading 30th run this season. Wood, sophomore outfielder Kristi Benvenuto and junior outfielder Jessica Seymour all had one hit for CU.

Concord concludes its six-game road trip 1:00 p.m. Monday at Notre Dame College.
