Box Score ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team lost to Fairmont State University, 68-40, in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center Thursday night.
The Mountain Lions held Fairmont State (17-8, 12-7 MEC) to its fourth lowest shooting percentage of the season, but couldn't overcome their own off shooting performance from the field (32.4 percent) in the defeat.
Concord (8-17, 5-14 MEC) was led by sophomore guard
Cam Shannon who went 4-for-7 from the field on his way to a team-high 11 points. Junior guard
Mike Boyd and freshman guard
Aaron Miller chipped in six points and five points, respectively. Boyd also recorded a Concord-high three assists.
The sophomore forward duo of
Nick Moyer and
Terry Hopewell each grabbed five rebounds to pace the Mountain Lions' attack on the glass. Freshman forward
Jalen Camper aided the rebounding effort with four off the bench. FSU, which entered the game with a +8.8 rebounding margin on the season, held just a two board edge over Concord Thursday (34-32).
Fairmont State got out to a quick start with a 20-3 run through the opening seven minutes of the game before CU answered back with a 14-4 spurt of its own to trim its deficit to just seven points at 24-17 with six minutes to play in the opening half. The run was sparked by five points apiece from Shannon and Miller. The teams traded baskets through the remainder of the period as FSU took a nine-point advantage, 31-22 into the break.
Concord hung with the Falcons through the first three minutes of the second half and found itself trailing by just seven points (35-28) before a decisive 15-2 run gave FSU a 50-30 lead that the Mountain Lions couldn't recover from en route to the 28-point Fairmont State win.
Chase Morgan scored a game-high 18 points off the bench for Fairmont State.
Concord will close out the week at home 4:00 p.m. Saturday vs. Shepherd.
