Concord Splits Doubleheader at Intermont

BRISTOL, Va. – The Concord University softball team secured a doubleheader split at host Virginia Intermont Wednesday evening at Highland View Park in Bristol, Va. by downing the Cobras, 8-2, in game two after dropping game one, 5-2.

The Mountain Lions' record now stands at an impressive 6-2 on the season while Virginia Intermont, which won the NAIA's Appalachian Athletic Conference in 2013, moves to 5-3 this year.

Game One: Virginia Intermont 5 - Concord 2 (Box Score)
Back-to-back home runs in the the third inning including a grand slam by Virginia Intermont was too much for the Mountain Lions to overcome in the 5-2 defeat in game one.

With the scored tied 0-0, junior outfielder Jessica Seymour led off the third inning with a solo home run for the Mountain Lions. After Seymour's home run, sophomore second baseman Kristen Rose walked and later scored on a fielder's choice by freshman Courtney Purtell to put CU up 2-0.

Virginia Intermont answered back in the bottom of the inning by scoring four of its five runs on a grand slam after freshman pitcher Sarah Herndon was able to get one out before giving up back-to-back singles and a walk, leading to Lauren Smith's four-run shot. The next batter, Tamara Campbell, also homered to put the Cobra's ahead for good.

Seymour, McDougall and freshman shortstop Alayna Furr accounted for Concord's three hits in the opener. Seymour's home run was her first of the year.

Herndon struck out five batters over three innings. Sophomore pitcher Allie Reid relieved Herndon and struck out four batters while giving up just three hits and no runs over the final three innings of play.

Game Two: Concord 8 - Virginia Intermont 2 (Box Score)
Concord scored five runs over the first two innings en route to the 8-2 victory in the nightcap.

McDougall and freshman Lauren Lewis led the offensive attack for Concord going 3-for-4 and 3-for-3, respectively.

Reid started the game for the Mountain Lions in the circle, going 3.2 innings, striking out five batters and allowing two runs on three hits. McDougall pitched the final 3.1 innings to earn a 10-out save.

Rose led off the game with a home run to put Concord on the board early.

Concord scored four more runs in the second inning. A single by Furr started the offensive output. After stealing a base, she was brought home by an RBI-single from Lewis. Lewis crossed the plate on another RBI single from Seymour.

Two batters later, McDougall smashed her first home run of the year, scoring Seymour, to extend the Concord lead to 5-0.

Virginia Intermont would get a run back in the bottom of the third and plate another run in the fourth to cut the Concord lead to 5-2.

Concord answered in the fifth with a two-out RBI double from Lewis that scored junior first baseman Brantlea Wood.

The Mountain Lions final two runs of the game came on a Reid home run that scored Lacey McDougall, who reached base earlier in the inning off of her third hit of the game.

For the season, McDougall's earned run average now stands at 0.38. McDougall also moved past Antonette Mazella (1997-200) for seventh on the career RBI list with 67 runs batted in.

With a stolen base against Virginia Intermont, Seymour moved into sixth place all-time in career steals with 21.

Concord returns to action Feb. 22-23 at the Shaw University Softball Challenge where the Mountain Lions will play Shaw, Elizabeth City State, St. Augustine's, Bowie State and Slippery Rock.
