Mike Boyd won't forget anytime soon as he led the Concord University men's basketball team to a 93-86 win over Urbana at the Grimes Center in Mountain East Conference play.
Concord improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action while Urbana evened its record to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. Â
Boyd tallied his 1,000
th career point becoming the 36
th different Mountain Lion to reach the milestone, scored a career-high 31 points and notched his first career double-double in points and rebounds, recording 10 boards.
Coming into the game, Boyd needed 28 points to join the prestigious scoring club.
After Urbana grabbed a very early lead of 5-2 through 90 seconds of play, CU began to assert its authority on the contest. The Mountain Lions ran off a 19-9 spurt to grab a lead of 21-14. Boyd, junior forward

Aaron Miller scored all 19 points for the Mountain Lions with Boyd scoring eight during the run.
CU continued to steadily push its lead to double digits, eventually leading by 18, 46-28, with 2:41 remaining in the first half. During the first 20 minutes of play, six different Concord players scored including Miller (13), Boyd (11) and Hopewell (10) all in double digits.
Junior guard
Rob Reed came off the bench to nail two three-pointers in the first half as the Mountain Lions shot 60.6 percent (20-for-33) from the floor in the first half compared to UU's 36.4 percent (12-for-33). At halftime, Concord led 46-31.
Urbana came storming out of the locker room and scored the first 12 points of the second half, forcing CU to call a timeout with their lead dwindled down to 46-43.
After the timeout, the Mountain Lions put the clamps on Urbana defensively outscoring them 12-4 over the next five minutes while not allowing a basket by the Blue Knights for nearly three minutes.
UU would get as close as 58-52 with 12:19 remaining in the game, but CU quickly raced back out to a double-figure lead as they coasted to a seven-point win.
Boyd scored his 1,000
th point from the free-throw line with 2:45 left in the game to push Concord to an 88-71 lead. For the game Boyd was 12-for-14 from the charity stripe, tying his career-high in made foul shots.
Hopewell, Miller and junior forward
Jametrius Wade joined Boyd in double figure scoring. Miller posted 17 points on 8-for-13 shooting to continue his early-season shooting streak. Wade was one rebound short of a double-double, but recorded 15 points and nine boards. Six of Wade's rebounds came on the offensive end. Hopewell had 14 points, seven rebounds and tied a career-high with six blocks.
Concord held significant advantages in field goal percentage (55.6-42.5), rebounds (44-34) and points in the paint (54-30).
The Mountain Lions will travel to the Bluefield State Currence Classic Friday to play the host at 7:30 p.m.
