ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team is ranked second in the NCAA Division II Super Region One Rankings that were released Monday afternoon by the national office.
The Mountain Lions, who sport a record of 8-0, were just one of two undefeated teams to appear in the Super Region One Rankings along with top-ranked and 8-0 Bloomsburg.
After Blooomsburg and Concord, the rankings were as followed: California (Pa.), West Chester, Winston-Salem State, American International, Shepherd, Virginia State, Slippery Rock and West Liberty.
The top six teams in each of the four super regions throughout Division II will advance to the NCAA Division II Playoffs, with the top two teams in each regional getting a bye into the second round of play. However, a conference champion from an automatic bid league that is ranked inside of the top eight, but not inside the top six, can bump the lowest ranked at-large team from the playoffs.
The Mountain East Conference champion will not have an automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs until next season.
This is the highest Concord has been ranked in the region under head coach
Garin Justice, who is in his fourth season.
The Mountain Lions are looking for their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2011, the first year Justice was at the helm at CU.
Concord will look to stay unbeaten Saturday when they take to the road to play UVa.-Wise.
