WHEELING, W. Va. – An off-shooting night proved to be too much to overcome for the Concord University men's basketball team as the Mountain Lions fell to Wheeling Jesuit, 100-72 in Mountain East Conference competition Monday night at the McDonough Center.
Concord was led by freshman guard
Aaron Miller, who came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting from three-point range while also collecting four rebounds.
The Mountain Lions (5-7, 2-4 MEC) played Wheeling Jesuit close through the first eight minutes of the first half, trailing by just four points at 13-9 with 12:42 to play in the half, but WJU took advantage of a 24-2 run over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 43-22 lead into halftime. Concord shot just 27.6 percent (8-for-29) from the field in the first half.
While a comeback-victory was not to be, Concord played markedly better in the second half, shooting 45.5 percent from the field, forcing 10 WJU turnovers and only being outscored by Wheeling Jesuit (6-3, 4-2 MEC) by seven points (57-50).
CU also received contributions off the bench from freshman guard
Ryan Meadows, who knocked down two three-pointers and made all six of his free throw attempts to score 12 points in just his second game in a Concord uniform.
In addition to matching a career-high with three steals, sophomore guard
Cam Shannon was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line on his way to a 12-point night, his third double-digit performance in the last four games.
Junior guard A.J. Williams added 10 points and three rebounds while the trio of junior guard
Mike Boyd, freshman guard
B.J. Hamlet and sophomore forward
Taylor Smith all chipped in seven points. Boyd pulled down a team-high five rebounds with Smith close behind with four rebounds of his own.
For the game, Concord shot 37.1 percent (23-for-62) from the field, 33.3 percent (9-for-27) from three-point range and 68 percent (17-for-25) from the foul line.
The Cardinals, which outrebounded CU 44-35, shot 52.9 percent (36-for-68) from the field and 10-for-21 from three-point range on their way to the win. Justin Fritts led WJU with 22 points and seven rebounds.
The Mountain Lions will look to snap its four-game losing streak when it hosts the University of Charleston 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Carter Center.
