BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team dropped a 72-64 decision to Mercer county rival Bluefield State Monday night at the Ned Shott Gymnasium in Bluefield, W. Va.
Concord (5-5, 2-2 Mountain East Conference) led by as many as five points at 16-11 with 12 minutes to play in the first half, but Bluefield State (4-9) went on a 20-10 run to take a 31-26 lead into halftime. The Big Blues extended their lead to as many as 13 points in the second half en route to the eight-point victory.
The Mountain Lions trimmed the BSC lead down to as little as six points with one minute remaining in the contest, but Bluefield State was able to withstand the comeback effort and hold onto the win by going 4-for-6 from the foul line down the stretch.
CU was paced by three players in double figures with junior guard
Mike Boyd and freshman guard
B.J. Hamlet leading the way with 14 points apiece. Boyd shot an efficient 6-for-9 from the field while Hamlet connected on four three-pointers.
Sophomore guard
Cam Shannon added 12 points, his third double-digit scoring effort in the last four games.
In addition to their scoring exploits, all three players were also factors on the glass with Shannon and Hamlet grabbing six rebounds each followed by Boyd pulling down five rebounds.
Other contributors for Concord included sophomore forwards
Nick Moyer and
Terry Hopewell. Moyer had seven points, six rebounds and two steals while Hopewell went for five points, five rebounds and one block.
As a team, Concord held a 38-35 rebounding edge over Bluefield State. For the game, CU shot 41 percent (25-for-61) from the field, but an uncharacteristically low 50 percent (9-for-18) from the foul line. The Mountain Lions forced Bluefield State to shoot just 43.6 percent (24-for-55) from the field, the second lowest field goal percentage by a Concord opponent this season.
Both teams committed 18 turnovers.
Bluefield State was led by Shakir Dunning, who scored a game-high 22 points. The victory avenged BSC's 81-78 loss at Concord earlier in the season.
The Mountain Lions will look to return to their winning ways when they hit the road to take on top-ranked West Liberty University Jan. 4 at 4:00 p.m.
