ATHENS, W. Va. – Despite playing a man down for the final 29:48 of the game, the Concord University men's soccer team came away with a convincing 2-0 victory over Shepherd University Wednesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play.
The win improves Concord's record to 3-7-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the MEC. Shepherd falls to 2-8-1 overall and 0-5-1 in league games.
Sophomore midfielder
Ryan Forde recorded his second multi-goal game of the year to lead the Mountain Lions to the victory. Forde now has seven goals on the season, the second most of any MEC player behind only Notre Dame College's Adam Mitchell (nine goals).
After a scoreless first half, Forde broke the 0-0 tie three minutes into the second period when he put home a ball that was delivered to him in the box off of skillful passes from junior defender
Cameron Russell and sophomore defender
Alex Williams. The assists were Russell's first on the year and Williams' third, a team-high.
Forde found the back of the net for a second time on the day in the 75th minute thanks to an assist from sophomore midfielder
Kris Robins. Forde's second goal came with Concord playing a man down after senior midfielder
Tyler Farrar picked up a red card in the 61st minute.
The two-goal advantage was more than enough for the Mountain Lions. Concord closed out the victory by successfully clearing three Shepherd corners and fending off a trio of Rams shots in the final nine minutes of regulation to preserve the shutout. Sophomore goalie
Mitchell Thompson (3-5-1) finished the outing with three saves.
Forde totaled a game-high four shots on goal with Robins, Russell and sophomore forward
Isaac Jordan adding one shot on goal apiece.
For the game, Concord held a 13-7 advantage over Shepherd in total shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The Rams bested Concord in corner kicks 8-1.
The Mountain Lions are back in action Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. at West Virginia Wesleyan. Earlier in the season, the Bobcats defeated Concord 2-1 in overtime.
