ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball team recorded a hitting percentage of .352 en route to a 3-1 (25-16, 25-12, 23-25, 25-21) victory over UVA-Wise Tuesday night in the Carter Center. The victory was the Mountain Lions' first home-opening win since 2009.
Concord improved its record to 3-2 on the season with the victory. UVA-Wise fell to 0-5 after suffering the loss.
Sarah Jones led the way with a match-high 15 kills to go with three digs and three blocks. Jones hit .536 for the match.
Jasmin Sutherland and
Rebecca Lovejoy each added six kills while
Brytni Willis chipped in five kills and a match-best 10 digs.
Nikki McMillan passed out 21 assists with
Amanda Walker totaling 13 assists of her own.
Lindsey Smith served up an impressive six aces in the four-set victory.
Allie Pennington (three aces) and Willis (two aces) also had solid serving nights.
Concord began the night's opening set trailing 3-0, but regrouped to go on a 10-1 run to take a 10-4 lead. The Cavaliers cut the lead to as little as four points, but never mounted a serious threat in the opening set, as CU cruised to the 25-16 victory.
The Mountain Lions dominated the second set, winning 25-12, and seemed poised to shutout the visitors in the third, but UVA-Wise had other plans in mind. The Cavilers battled back in the third, eventually coming away with a 25-23 win to make it a 2-1 match. However, Concord wasn't about to let their home-opener slip away. Despite a late rally by UVA-Wise, The Mountain Lions were able to pull out a 25-21 win the fourth set to close out the match with a 3-1 win.
The Maroon and Gray will look to continue to win back-to-back matches for the first time this season when they head to New Castle, Del. for the Wildcat Invitational Sept. 7-8. Concord will begin the Invite with contests against University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and West Chester University.
