Concord Falls To Travecca Nazarene, 8-0

The Concord University men’s soccer team began the 2012 season on down note Friday at the Muskingum Invitational as the Mountain Lions lost 8-0 to Travecca Nazarene.

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Concord University men's soccer team began the 2012 season on down note Friday at the Muskingum Invitational as the Mountain Lions lost 8-0 to Travecca Nazarene.

As a team, Concord (0-1) totaled 12 shots, but was unable to beat TNU goalie Brraydon Brown, who made four saves in 90 minutes to pick up the shutout-victory.

Freshmen Joe Sweet and Kris Robins paced Concord (0-1) with two shots each. Freshman Mitchell Thompson got the start at goalie and made three saves while also allowing four goals. Senior Matt Hamilton made five saves after taking over in the second half, but he also allowed four Travecca Nazarene scores.

The Mountain Lions starting lineup featured five freshmen. Alex Williams and Tyler Harris joined Sweet, Robins and Thompson in the starting lineup.

The two teams played each other evenly throughout the first 16 minutes of play, but Travecca Nazarene was able to break open the scoreless game when Richie Reichenberger beat Thompson at 16:32. Jonathan Baskin added two consecutive goals to give TNU a 3-0 lead. Matt Esquivel made it a 4-0 game heading into halftime with a score at 26:51.

Travecca Nazrene added three more goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to take a commanding 7-0 lead en route to its 8-0 triumph. Baskin finished the game with four goals.

Concord will look to improve its record to 1-1 2 p.m. Saturday when they play Invitational host, Muskingum.
