SOFTBALL: THE LATE, LATE SHOW

CU SWEEPS SETON HILL WITH TWO WALK-OFF WINS

Concord's softball worked late – twice – in sweeping a WVIAC doubleheader from Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountain Lions coupled strong pitching with clutch hitting to post a pair of walk-off wins, 2-1 (in eight innings) and 5-1, at the CU complex in Athens.

Stephanie Harper's RBI single won the first game for CU, while Lacey McDougall brought the day to a dramatic conclusion with a grand slam home run to win the nightcap to end Concord's season-long eight-game homestand.

Winning Run vs SHU
CU starting pitcher Tamara Smith found herself in a pitchers' duel for the second time in as many days, as she and Seton Hill's Christine Henderson matched each other pitch for pitch.

The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd on Amanda Arnold's leadoff solo home run.  But Concord bunched together four singles in the bottom of the inning, and squared the score on Lacey McDougall's two-out RBI base hit.

Smith and Henderson kept the score at 1-1 through the regulation seven innings, setting up the international tie-breaker in the 8th.

In the top of the inning, with Brandi Piccolino placed at second base, Taylor Marchozzi lined out to
centerfielder Jessica Seymour, who threw to shortstop Sheila Davies to double off Piccolino.

In the bottom of the frame, Stephanie Harper singled to right center, bringing in Smith (left) with the run that snapped CU's seven-game losing streak and the Griffins' eight-game winning streak.

Smith allowed only three hits and walked none in getting the complete-game victory.  Becca Gleason went 4-4 to lead the Concord offense.

GAME TWO
BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

The contest again became a pitchers' duel with Harper and Danielle Treaster matching each other with five shutout innings.

Concord broke through in the bottom of the 6th on Sheila Davies' leadoff solo homer – her first of the season.

Seton Hill tied the game in the top of the 7th on Felicia Domasky's two-out RBI double off McDougall, who took over for Harper the inning before.  But the CU freshman would find redemption.

In the bottom of the 7th, with Gleason on first and one out, Treaster walked Sheila Davies, and Harper reached on a fielders' choice to load the bases.

That brought up McDougall (right) , who launched a Treaster offering over the fence in left center field for the game-winning grand slam.  It was McDougall's first collegiate home run.

Up next for Concord (15-24, 4-11) is a WVIAC doubleheader at the University of Charleston on Wednesday, April 11.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
