SOFTBALL: HOMESTAND STARTS WITH SWEEP

D&E TAKES TWO FROM CU IN ATHENS

The Concord softball team opened an eight-game homestand – its longest of the season – by dropping both games of a WVIAC doubleheader to Davis & Elkins Tuesday afternoon, 9-0 and 3-1, at the CU complex in Athens.

GAME ONE

D&E  jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the top of the 1st, but CU starting pitcher Stephanie Harper settled down and kept them off the board until the 5th.

Sheila Davies Sacrifice
That's when the Senators rallied for five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Bridget Ours.
In the 7th, Ours struck again, with a two-run shot to left that closed out the scoring.

D&E starter Alanna Jones held CU to two hits – a double from Tamara Smith in the 1st, and a double from Becca Gleason in the 7th.

GAME TWO

The Senators again scored quickly, when Mallory Wishard's single drove in Amanda Serafini in the top of the 1st.  They added two more runs in the 6th to take a 3-0 lead.

Concord broke through against D&E starter Autumn Appleby in the bottom of the 6th.  Gleason drew a leadoff walk, then beat the throw to second after Lacey McDougall's attempted sacrifice bunt.  With runners at first and second with nobody out, Sheila Davies sacrificed to advance the runners.

Brantlea Wood hit a slow roller near the plate, and Senators catcher Carissa Dunn misfired on a throw to first base.  Gleason scored, McDougall reached third and Wood hustled to second.

However, the weather turned bad, and the game went into a 67-minute rain delay at 6:03 pm.  After the contest resumed, Jones came on in relief of Appleby and retired the next two hitters to end the Concord threat.

In the bottom of the 7th, Ericka Davies led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch.  Jessica Seymour walked, and another wild pitch advanced both runners.  But Jones retired the next three batters to end the game.

Up next for Concord (13-21, 2-8) is a quick turnaround before another WVIAC doubleheader.  The Mountain Lions will host Glenville State tomorrow – Wednesday, April 4 – starting at 2:00 pm at the CU complex in Athens.  Admission is free.
