Men’s Basketball to Host Charleston Thursday

ATHENS, W. Va. - Winners of three out of its last four games, the Concord University men's basketball team will start the new year with a home contest against West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Charleston.

MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
• The Mountain Lions are coming off of a 92-81 victory at West Virginia Tech on Dec. 15. Concord was led by the duo of senior Damien Tunstalle and sophomore Thomas Brown. Tunstalle tallied 21 points, five rebounds and three steals. Brown added 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

• Concord is 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the WVIAC. The six wins in eight games is the best start by a Concord team since beginning the season 7-0 in 2003-04. CU begins the New Year in seventh place in the conference. Charleston sits in fifth place with a league record of 3-2 and an overall mark of 7-2.

• Both teams are on a one-game winning streak.

• Concord and Charleston have very similar shooting percentages with respective field goal percentages of 46.8 and 46.4 percent.

• Concord is well represented in the WVIAC statistical leaderboard. Tunstalle, who is 271 points shy of 1,000, ranks fourth in scoring (19.5 ppg), 11th in field goal percentage (80.6 percent) and seventh in three-pointers made.

• Sophomore Jordan Davis is slotted fourth in field goal percentage (64.2 percent) and 11th in rebounding (6.4 rpg).

• Sophomore Mike Boyd ranks third in assist/turnover ratio (2.60), eighth in assists (4.9 apg) and 13th in free throw percentage (78.6 percent).

• Brown and sophomore Paul Byrd are tied for ninth in the league with matching 44.4 percent shooting averages from three-point range. Byrd is also second in FT percentage (90.0)

The Coaches: Kent McBride is in his second season as head coach for Concord. In his time at CU, McBride has compiled an overall record of 23-14.

Mark Downey is 47-22 at Charleston and 124-65 for his career as a head coach.
