Don't let the standings fool you. Bluefield State's men's basketball team is better than its record.

Concord found that out on Saturday afternoon, dropping its regular season finale to the Big Blues 74-65 in a WVIAC contest at the Ned Shott Gymnasium in Bluefield, WV.

BSC started the season 1-15, but recovered to win four of its next nine games. Along the way the Blues defeated Charleston, Pitt-Johnstown, West Virginia State and Wheeling Jesuit – all teams that finished the season in the top half of the WVIAC.

Saturday, the Mountain Lions saw BSC bolt out to a 24-9 lead less than 10 minutes after tipoff. Concord steadied itself and closed to within 36-31 at halftime, but Bluefield State regained control after the break.

The Big Blues started the 2nd half with a 20-8 jog that stretched their advantage to 56-39 with 12:21 to go. CU would get no closer than eight points after that.

struggled from the free throw line (14-23, .609) and from three-point range (7-24, .292). Bluefield State shot .536 (30-56) from the field and outrebounded Concord 41-29.

Zack Williams (above right) and Aaron Fluellen (left) topped Concord with ten points each. Bluefield State's front line hurt the Mountain Lions -- Hickman Simmons led the Big Blues with 19 points, while Jerome Johnson added a double-double of 12 points and ten rebounds.
