MEN'S SOCCER: RARE COMMODITIES

CU BOWS IN DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE

In a game in which even shots were hard to come by, goals became even more valuable.

The Concord Men's Soccer team found itself on the wrong end of the ledger Saturday afternoon, as visiting Wheeling Jesuit banked two early goals and hung on for a 2-1 win in a WVIAC match at Anderson Field.

The Cardinals, who tried just four shots on the day, took the first lead on a counterattack.  After a Concord corner kick early in the 9th minute, WJU went the length of the field for an unassisted goal by Ignacio Fernandez.

Wheeling Jesuit doubled its advantage a short time later.  Kevin Robson scored in the 15th minute, assisted by Victor Picchio.

The Mountain Lions would allow only two more shots from WJU, but managed only five shots themselves.  Ivan Deyanov put two shots on goal, and Jacob Wise and Caleb Bone also put a try on target, but CU couldn't break through until Deyanov's penalty kick in the 90th minute.  Then time ran out.

Up next for CU is a non-conference match against Shippensburg Univeristy (PA) on Monday, October 10.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm at Anderson Field, and admission is free.

The match was originally scheduled for September 7, but had to be rescheduled due to heavy rains and a "waterlogged pitch."
