HEAVY RAIN POSTPONES WEDNESDAY'S MATCH AGAINST SHIPPENSBURG

Until recently, southern West Virginia had been going through a dry summer with an uncharacteristic lack of rain.

But once the rain began, it hasn't stopped, and it shows no signs of coming to an end anytime soon.

As a result, the Concord Men's Soccer team's non-conference match against Shippensburg University (PA) scheduled for 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 7 is postponed.
It was to have been CU's 2011 home opener.

The two squads plan to make up the match on Monday, October 10 at Anderson Field on the CU campus in Athens. A new kickoff time has yet to be determined.

Storms associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee arrived in southern West Virginia Saturday, and forced a delay in the kickoff of Concord's Football game against Lenoir-Rhyne at Callaghan Stadium that night.

The rains have continued since then, and the seemingly-ceaseless precipitation has rendered Anderson Field unplayable – it's become a “waterlogged pitch” in soccer terms.

CU head coach Steve Barrett tried to find another place in southern West Virginia to stage the match with Shippensburg, but a playable venue could not be found.

“It's funny that, last week, we were hoping for rain,” Barrett said. “Now it's become a case of 'be careful what you wish for.' Anderson Field takes water well, but everything has its limits. There are puddles up and down the pitch and it simply wouldn't be safe to play on.”

Concord's next match is scheduled for Saturday, September 10, at Seton Hill. It's the Mountain Lions' WVIAC opener, and kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm in Greensburg, PA.

CU's home opener is now set for Wednesday, September 14 against WVIAC foe West Virginia Wesleyan, as part of a doubleheader with Concord's Women's team.
The women's match kicks off at 2:00 pm, with the men set to follow at 4:00.  Admission is free.
