WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: NO EASY FINISH

LADY LIONS SUBDUE STUBBORN WHEELING JESUIT

Jolysa Brown & Kristin Kidd vs WJU 247 x 235
Kenny Osborne knew his Concord Women's Basketball team wouldn't have an easy time with 4-9 Wheeling Jesuit Saturday afternoon.

“I know their record shows they've struggled at some times this season,” the CU head coach said before the game against the Lady Cardinals, “but they will play hard right to the end.”

He was right.  The Lady Lions would twice open up leads of 20 points or more, including a 58-37 lead with less than 14 minutes to play, but had to hold off the stubborn Lady Cardinals in an 83-71 win at the Carter Center.

The win was Concord's third straight and the sixth in their last eight games.

WJU scored first on Kourtney Booth's three-point shot, but the Lady Lions embarked on 14-2 run and would lead for the rest of the game.

Concord would open up a 35-15 advantage with 4:46 left in the half, only to see Wheeling Jesuit post a 14-2 run of their own to pull within 37-29 1:39 left before halftime. A jumper by Amanda Smith (who scored 13 points in the first half) and a three-point play by Kristin Kidd would push Concord's lead to 42-29 at the break.

The Lady Lions would open a 21-point lead with 13:33 left in the game, but WJU again battled back.
The Lady Cardinals closed within 73-67 on Lauren Myers' layup with 2:44 left, but Camisha Alexander sank a three-point shot on Concord's next possession to give CU some breathing room. Concord sank 7-8 free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.

Alexander and Smith each scored 17 points to pace Concord. Kidd finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Sidney Lindsey chipped in 11 points, and Jolysa Brown posted a double-double of 11 points and 16 rebounds.

Megan Stuvek led Wheeling Jesuit with her own double-double of 21 points, 16 rebounds.
