MEN'S BASKETBALL: PRESSING ISSUES

CU OVERCOMES 21 TURNOVERS IN DEFEATING OHIO VALLEY

Loose Ball vs OVU 235 x 280
Ohio Valley Men's Basketball coach Mike Snell did his homework.

Snell saw that Concord struggled at times against Fairmont State's full-court press last Saturday, turning over the ball 22 times in an 80-67 loss.

So Snell had his team press Concord when they met in a WVIAC contest Monday night.

It nearly worked.

Concord committed 21 turnovers, but just seven in the 2nd half and only one in the final five-and-a-half minutes in defeating Ohio Valley 98-93 at the Carter Center.

The win improved Concord to 7-5, 4-4, and surpassed the victory for all of last season. Ohio Valley left with a record of 4-7, 4-5.

The up-tempo, entertaining game saw 13 ties, 16 lead changes and both teams combine to shoot .514 from the field.

Concord opened a quick 10-4 lead, but Ohio Valley charged back to go ahead 23-21.

The Fighting Scots would push their lead to 32-26 before CU scored seven unanswered points to reclaim the advantage.

The lead would change hands five more times before OVU took a 46-43 lead at halftime.

Ohio Valley scored the first six points of the 2nd half to take their biggest lead at 52-43, before Concord dropped an 11-2 run to square matters at 54-54. Then came eight more lead changes and six more ties.

The game was even at 85-85 when Concord went on a 9-2 run that gave them a 94-87 lead with 1:53 to go. Ohio Valley would pull within three points twice after that, but CU dashed their comeback hopes by going 4-4 from the free throw line in the final 38 seconds.

Javaughn Acree-Manuel bounced back from his 11-point game Saturday with a team-high 26 against OVU. The junior from Lansing, MI shot 7-15 from the floor, 5-10 from three point range, and was 7-8 at the line.
Kortea Johnson added 16 points and Gentry Shrewsbury 12.

Ohio Valley got 27 points from Donavin Vinson and 25 points and eight rebounds from Kendall Allison.

The Fighting Scots grabbed 20 offensive rebounds, which led to 29 second-chance points. But the Fighting Scots shot 5-25 from three-point range while Concord was 10-18.
The Mountain Lions were 30-35 from the free throw line, compared to 12-19 for OVU.
