LADY LIONS SPOIL BLUEFIELD COLLEGE'S HOMECOMING

Anyone who says soccer isn't a contact sport didn't watch the Concord Women's team play at Bluefield College Saturday morning, October 16.

The Lady Lions persevered through a match with 21 combined fouls and three bench red cards to defeat BC 5-1 in a non-conference contest at the East River Soccer Complex in Bluefield, WV. It was homecoming for the host Lady Rams.

The victory was Concord's third in a row and raised CU's record to 7-6. Concord is over .500 for the first time this season after starting 0-3.

CU outshot Bluefield College 19-14 and had a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal. Gemma Nortcliffe paced the Concord attack with two goals.

Erika Hoff gave CU the first lead of the morning with a goal in the 37th minute. Concord took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the 58th minute, referees stopped play to assess two bench red cards on the host Lady Rams and one on Concord.

A little more than four minutes later, Nortcliffe got her first goal to extend the CU lead. Kate Armentrout would score 41 seconds later to make the score 3-0; in between the two goals, officials whistled a combined five fouls.

The game's last three goals came in a flurry. Alyssa Hessian scored in the 76th minute to put CU up 4-0, but Kelby Dove got the Rams on the board with a goal just :10 later. However, only 1:16 after that, Nortcliffe scored her second goal to give the match its final score.
