Men's Soccer Defeats Salem International

CU Closes Out WVIAC Schedule With 4-1 Win

There have been ups and downs for Concord Men's Soccer in the second season of its revived program.

The Mountain Lions closed out their 2009 conference schedule on a definite "up."

Concord scored a flurry of goals in the closing minutes to post a 4-1 win over Salem International Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.

In the end, Concord outshot the Tigers 41-3, including a 17-2 advantage in shots on goal.  The Mountain Lions attempted seven corner kicks while SIU tried none.

But despite the clear numerical advantages, Concord didn't take command of the game until well into the second half.

Ivan Deyanov put Concord in the lead with an unassisted goal with 1:48 remaining in the first half, and Concord took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Salem International would get the equalizer on an unassisted goal from Patrick Vollert with 20:27 remaining in regulation.

The score remained 1-1 until Deyanov found the net again with 6:28 remaining.  His second goal of the game, off an assist from Zach Piekarski, triggered an avalanche of goals that put the matter out of reach.

Just 1:31 after Deyanov's tally, Frankie Parks scored, set up by another Piekarski assist.

Then, just 2:18 later (with 3:39 remaining), Piekarski would find the net on a penalty kick that ended the scoring and erased any doubt.

The win closed out Concord's WVIAC schedule at 2-7-1 and raised CU's overall record to 5-10-1.

The Mountain Lions play their 2009 home finale on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, in a non-conference match with Virginia Intermont.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm EDT at Anderson Field.
