Louisville, KY- Coming off a heart breaking loss in the conference tournament final last season, Concord University's Lady Lions soccer came into this season hungry. Bellarmine, who debuted their $5.1 million Frazier Stadium in their contest against Concord, was shocked as the Lady Lions beat the Knights 2-1.
Bellarmine, who lost 2-1 to Concord last season, is coming off a perfect home season from a year ago. However, their winning streak came to a halt as freshman Gemma Nortcliffe opened the season with her first Concord goal striking a ball past the Knight's goalkeeper Brittany Rogers. Bellarmine had a chance to score towards the end of the first half as the Knight's Nicole Glockner had a shot on goal. Concord's aggressive goalie Sarah Coelho made the save to keep the game in favor of the Lady Lions at halftime 1-0. Coelho ended the game with an impressive 13 saves.
Sophomore Katie Cuviello put the Lady Lions up 2-0 in the 66th minute of the game as she put a shot off the crossbar that bounced into the goal. Bellarmine tried to pull close towards the end of the game as Stephanie Wilson of the Knights scored in the 88th minute. But the damage had been done as Concord spoiled the facility debut and left Louisville with a win.
The Lady Lions will now travel to Northern Kentucky to face the Norsemen on Sunday, August 26th. Gametime is set for 9:00am.
