STEVE BARRETT
COACHES BIO
Steve Barrett was born and raised in Colchester, England and first came to America on a soccer scholarship to Liberty University. After receiving a B.S. in Physical Education he went on to receive a M.S. in Sport Management from Virginia Tech.
Barrett has been at Concord University for 10 years. Prior to arriving in Athens, WV, he was at LeTourneau University where he managed a very successful soccer program. He currently holds the most wins in a career in LeTourneau’s soccer history and also has the most wins in one season. His teams were consistent winners at both the NAIA and Div. III levels. His players have won numerous All-American, All-Region , All-Conference honors and he has also coached several Academic All-Americans.
Barrett arrived at Concord in 1999 and was given the task of turning both the men’s and women’s soccer teams around. In his second season, the women were ranked #1 in the country in turn-a-round wins and the men were ranked 3rd. After only four years, the women claimed the WVIAC conference regular season and conference tournament championship with the women. He has been voted WVIAC Coach of the Year twice and was NAIA Region Coach of the Year in 1997 at LeTourneau.
Barrett has returned to coaching the Concord University men after the program was dropped in March 2003. From 2003 to 2007 Barrett retained the women’s program when the men’s program was dropped in 2003. He was given the task in January 2008 to resurrect the men’s program and finished the first year with a 5-12 record, losing 3 games in overtime.
Coach Barrett has been called a “player’s coach”. He relates to each player and treats them with respect. He is interested in developing the whole person which includes; skills relevant for winning soccer matches, a competitive spirit and most importantly good sportsmanship/citizenship. He is involved with the local soccer community and is Director of Coaching at the East River Soccer Association. He is also a state ODP coach. He has his UEFA “B” License and conducts clinics and camps.
Steve Barrett has been married to Tina for 19 years and they have three children, Austen, 17; Brandon, 14; and Amanda, 12. His family resides in Athens, WV.
