Steve Barrett

One of the most tenured coaches in the Concord athletic department, Steve Barrett will begin his 24th season on the sidelines in 2021 and his 32nd overall in collegiate soccer.

Barrett has played an instrumental part of both the men’s and women’s Concord soccer programs since coming to Athens after spending a total of eight seasons as the head coach at LeTourneau University and Montreat College. He led the women’s team from 1999-2008 as well as the men’s team from 1999 until the program was discontinued in 2003 before regaining his current position when men’s soccer was reinstated at Concord in 2008.

As a collegiate head coach, Barrett has amassed an overall record of 253-343-29. He is 85-84-4 as a women’s head coach and 168-259-25 as a men’s coach on the collegiate level. Included in Barrett’s career are nine winning seasons, two West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year awards in (2002 / 2006), one NAIA Regional Coach of the Year honor (1997) and one WVIAC title.

In his time as a head coach at Concord Barrett has mentored 45 all-conference athletes, six all-region selections and three WVIAC Players of the Year. Additionally, Barrett coached all four women's soccer players that are in the Concord Hall of Fame: Lesley Ashford, Leanna Neuner Bahwell, Megan Davies,  and Hannah Ashton Smith

In the 2016, Barrett's team produced six wins which tied the most victories for CU men's soccer program since it was reinstated over a decade ago.

As Concord’s women’s coach, Barrett quickly turned around a team that won just two matches in 1999 to 11 wins in 2000 and all the way to a WVIAC title in 2002. Barrett’s teams finished at or above the .500 winning percentage mark in seven of his 10 seasons as the Mountain Lions’ women’s head coach.

Prior to joining the Concord staff, Barrett began his coaching career at Montreat College for two seasons before moving on to LeTourneau University for six seasons. He still holds LeTourneau records for career victories (78) and single-season wins (16). He was named the NAIA Region Coach of the Year in 1997.

His teams were consistent winners in both the NAIA and NCAA Division III, and his players earned numerous All-America, all-region and all-conference honors. Barrett also coached several Academic All-American honorees.

He has a UEFA “B” License and conducts clinics and camps.

Born and raised in Colchester, England, Barrett first came to the U.S. on a soccer scholarship to Liberty University, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1989. He went on to earn a master’s degree in Sport Management from Virginia Tech.

Barrett resides in Athens, West Virginia with his wife Tina. The couple have three adult children, Amanda, Austen and Brandon
