Concord University Hall of Fame inductee Will Johnson begins his fourth season as CU’s head men’s and women’s golf coach in 2014-15. In three season, Johnson has guided both Mountain Lion programs to unprecedented success.
On his watch, the men’s team won the final West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in 2012-13 as well as the inaugural Mountain East Conference championship in 2013-14. Just as impressive is Concord’s success on the national stage; the Mountain Lions have qualified for the NCAA Tournament three consecutive years.
Additionally, Johnson has coached eight all-conference award choices, five PING all-region selections, two conference championship tournament medalist winners (Stefan Labushagne / Evan Muscari) and the 2013 WVIAC Player of the Year (Stefan Labushagne).
For his efforts, Johnson was named the WVIAC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2012-13 season.
The Concord women’s golf program has also excelled under Johnson. In the last three years, Concord has finished no worse than fifth at the conference championship tournaments. Individually, seven Mountain Lions have earned all-conference honors with Marina Erice leading the way by winning the 2011-12 WVIAC Championship.
Erice and teammate Stephanie Peareth have also both qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2011-12 and 2013-14, respectively.
Before taking over the Concord golf program, Johnson was an assistant coach for the Concord men’s basketball team as well as serving as the Mountain Lions’ women’s basketball team’s head coach from 1993 through the 2000 season.
Johnson is no stranger to success at Concord University; he was a standout on the men’s basketball team from 1976-80, averaging 18.6 points per game and 12.1 rebounds per game over a 94-game career. Johnson, a three-time All-WVIAC honoree and the 1978-79 WVIAC Tournament MVP, still ranks fourth for Concord in career rebounds, sixth in field goals made and ninth in points scored.
