Trent Abernathy begins his third season on the Concord baseball coaching staff.
The former Concord pitcher transitions to a full-time assistant coaching role after finishing up his two seasons as a graduate assistant at the conclusion of the 2023 season. Abernathy is the program's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
Abernathy was on the CU pitching staff from 2017-21 as he appeared in 49 games over five seasons. He tossed 209 innings and went 14-7 on the mound with 223 strikeouts and an ERA of 5.29. He ranks third in program history in strikeouts and sixth in innings pitched. His 85 strikeouts during the 2021 season are the most in a single-season in program history.
The Harrisonburg, Virginia native was named to the American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA) All-Region Second Team in 2021 along with being selected to the All-Mountain East Conference Second Team. Abernathy was 5-4 on the mound with an ERA of 4.23 in 76.2 innings for Concord.
Abernathy saved one of the best performances in his career for the opening game of the 2021 MEC Tournament as he tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts in a 15-1 defeat of Wheeling, leading to him being placed on the All-MEC Tournament Team.
Under his tutelage this spring, Andrew Neff was named MEC Pitcher of the Year and All-Atlantic Region. Eddie Blake and Rylee Nicholas also earned all-conference accolades under Abernathy's watchful eye. Neff was the first conference pitcher of the year for CU in nearly two decades.
