ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team beat Bluefield State in four sets Wednesday night in a non-conference match at the Carter Center.

Concord (8-6) won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-13 before being clipped in the third set, 25-23. However, CU took the fourth game, 25-17.

The Mountain Lions were efficient in the first two games as they rolled up 23 kills in the first two sets as opposed to just four errors, hitting .429 in the second set.

With the first set tied at 7-7, Concord ran off a 9 of the next 12 points to open up the breathing room it needed to cruise to a 1-0 lead. In the second game, Concord turned a slim 7-4 lead into a 21-9 advantage after a service ace by senior setter Haley Sweeney gave the Mountain Lions a 12-point margin.

CU nearly swept Bluefield State (5-4) as it stormed back from a 24-18 deficit to only lose by two points, 25-23. In the 5-0 run, senior outside hitter Meg Williams had three of her team-best 12 kills. In the third game, the Mountain Lions recorded 20 kills, but could not overcome nine errors as BSU held off Concord.

Despite the third set result, the Mountain Lions shook off the chance at a potential sweep and kept Big Blue at arm's length in the fourth game. Holding a 9-5 edge, Concord forced BSU to trade points before opening a 21-12 lead after a solo block from senior middle hitter Jasmine Anderson.

Concord's .254 hitting percentage was the second-highest of the season.

Williams was one of three Mountain Lions with double-digit kills as senior outside Chloe Thompson (11) and sophomore middle hitter Addie Adkins (10) also finished with 10 or more kills.

Senior setter Paige Richmond tallied 28 assists while Sweeney added 13 assists.

Senior libero Allie Davis went for 21 digs while Williams' 12 digs helped her to her sixth double-double of the season. Anderson had a match-best six blocks.

The Mountain Lions open Mountain East Conference play 7:00 p.m. Friday at Frostburg State.
